I had always owned bully breeds, specifically Staffordshire Terriers and American Terriers, so when Sadie (the dog pictured on the left) came into the shelter I worked at and needed a temporary place to call home, I was hesitant. She was a street dog in Mexico, and then spent two years in a shelter there before coming to a shelter in Canada. She was extremely fearful of people, sounds and movements.
Our training journey has been a long road, but along the way she has come so far, and taught me so much. I began counter conditioning to form positive associations with things she was fearful of paired with enrichment activities When dealing with a dog that has had a difficult past, it is important to remember that your dog needs a stable, consistent leader. Your dog doesn't want you to feel sorry for them, because dogs live in the moment. This is often forgotten, but so very important when training dogs, not just fearful ones.
Sadie is now a stable, happy, Canadian dog who loves going to the park, the farm, exploring different downtown city cores, and having play dates with her many dog friends. Throughout our journey we formed a strong bond, and for this reason, she is still apart of my family today.
